Inevitably, some pop-culture, fashion-type magazine runs an article ironically followed by an article with 22 great date ideas praising the joys of the unaccompanied life. But the question remains: Why would a single and ready to mingle country with great prospects hole up in its room with its proverbial Netflix and sadness-chocolate and deny itself the benefits of trade, treaties, and alliances? Although time and time again the US has involved itself in the politics of other countries, we have often been reluctant to do so.
However, after WWII, our isolationist policy faded. As America heralds a new era of neo-isolationism under President Trump, many other countries are returning to semi-isolationism themselves.
Back in January , I submitted the following article for publication in the Student Review (BYU’s off-campus weekly magazine). The Student Review staff decided not to publish the article, so, after more than a year, I am posting it here.
February 27, 9: BYU students have as many dates in a month as do women in four years at a mainstream college, says now-retired BYU professor Bruce Chadwick. He taught sociology at the university for 35 years and did a survey on dating and marriage at BYU. He added he has never personally participated in a NCMO. Chrissy Barnes, 20, of Spokane, Wash.
I’m not one to judge though. While 60 percent to 70 percent of unmarried college students say they have had sex, at BYU the percentage is 3 percent to 4 percent, he said. Dating is a huge pastime at BYU, whether it be formal dates, group dates or simply hanging out in groups. The survey states that at BYU, 23 percent of the men and 19 percent of the women claimed having five or more dates per month.
Thirty-five percent of the men and 27 percent of the women had at least one date a week.
Five rules for dating at BYU-Idaho
The results provide evidence that BYU students do in fact act quite differently from their counterparts at other American universities, making BYU unique. Here find data about the surprising frequency of hanging out and dating and how BYU students overwhelmingly keep the law of chastity. Also included in this issue, Julie K. Allen and David L.
Welcome to the wonderful world of BYU-Idaho, and when I say welcome I mean it. BYU-Idaho is a world within itself. While BYU-Idaho is located in a small town of Rexburg, Idaho the dating scene here can be fast paced and sometimes just downright difficult to deal with.

5 Things you Have to do at BYU-Idaho
Times have changed, and that is a good thing—especially the fading-away of cruel taboos that once stigmatized women who engaged in premarital sex or bore children out of wedlock. Thing is, times change for a reason. The values question assumes that sexual mores loosen naturally from conservative to liberal.
In reality, these values have ebbed and flowed throughout history, often in conjunction with prevailing sex ratios. But the problem is a demographic one. Multiple studies show that college-educated Americans are increasingly reluctant to marry those lacking a college degree.
Jun 16, · newsflash: for my new and improved opinion on BYUI dating, check out the bottom of the page.I updated it. Having been a part of the BYU-Idaho community for almost a year now, I’ve come to realize that the way things are done here is very different from what I was accustom to.
Lyman Amasa enjoys art, music, and traveling. Some day he hopes to make it to Romania and settle down. Men search the world for women that they can stand to be around with long-term. Narcissism, androgyny, obsession with pop culture—the problems with Western women go on and on. Is there some place, a secluded land untouched by time, where women still make good wives?
Mormons are one of the few remaining groups with healthy women. Because Mormons retain old-fashioned values, Mormon girls are raised in a traditional environment by good fathers. They value femininity, motherhood, and masculinity in men. This makes them overwhelmingly successful wives and mothers.

I describe many of these problems in this video. A student of ours also summarized some of the major points in the video and provided many of her own insights on her blog www. We share her comments below. Also, if you are fed up with the dating culture and actually want to do something about it, share this article publicly on your Facebook page. There is no point in complaining if we are not going to do something about it! As a student at BYU-Idaho, I have noticed habits and patterns in the dating culture at my university that not are only lame, but are very dangerous and concerning.
Please help them to walk in paths of truth and righteousness and keep them from the evils of the world. Bless them that they shall be happy at times and serious at times, that they may enjoy life and drink of its fulness. Bless them that they may walk acceptably before Thee as Thy cherished sons and daughters. It was the most ennobling endowment He could give His daughters, a sacred trust that gave women an unparalleled role in helping His children keep their second estate.
Never has there been a greater need for righteous mothers—mothers who bless their children with a sense of safety, security and confidence about the future, mothers who teach their children where to find peace and truth and that the power of Jesus Christ is always stronger than the power of the adversary. Every time we build the faith or reinforce the nobility of a young woman or man, every time we love or lead anyone even one small step along the path, we are true to our endowment and calling as mothers and in the process we build the kingdom of God.
April General Conference Note:
The ratio was something like 3: Despite rumors that it’s more like 1. Nearly every class I have is overfilled with marriage hungry girls, claiming to be spinsters at age nineteen. I don’t know if it’s just the actual ratio of girls to guys, but I feel as though the whole dating atmosphere here is a giant game of which-girl-can-be-more-aggressive. Let’s face it, if you aren’t the type of girl to go hunt down the unwed men in your classes and practically force yourself on them, you’re chances of happening upon a friendship with a male who is unattached is slim.
Part of that, however, I believe is attributed to the guys, but I’ll touch on that later.
As a borderline narcissistic introvert, you might be surprised to learn that I have friends, even friends from many different lands states and persuasions. But to the point. Here, in no particular sequence of topics, are some observations from students, friends, and neighbors on dating culture among Mormons, and sometimes, others. One friend observed that the experience of two relatives suggests that serious relationships among singles are drying up.
A close friend from his youth married a short time ago, his new wife was his first serious relationship in over a decade. He wonders if the lack of a serious significant other outside of an engagement is now relatively common. The understood subtext to all dates adds an extra-weird pressure to LDS dating. It also increases the isolation of single people, and can exacerbate and further cripple the ability to relate to the opposite sex as anything other than a potential partner.
I believe this dynamic is also carried over and amplified by our segregation of the sexes even after marriage, and our odd institutional fear of men and women being incapable of real, non-sexual friendship.
